New registrations
Posted by Lightning @ October 20, 2011, 2:23 PM

Due to the site being slow and starting to be overrun by bots (thanks [SS] for pointing it out), I've changed new registrations so they have to be approved. As a result, if you are new and wish to actually talk about Gekko, come find me on IRC in the dolphin channel. I tend to idle but will respond to messages if I'm awake.

My Fate with Gekko & a New Project
Posted by ShizZy @ October 04, 2011, 3:00 AM

So I was thinking today – It’s been nearly four years since I’ve updated Gekko. And it pains me to say (and even think) it, but I don’t think I’m going to update it in the next four years either. (Heck – if I wanted to start touching it, I’d be compelled to rewrite the whole thing because I’ve grown so much as a programmer since 2006).

That doesn’t mean the project is dead – it’s not. I think it’s just in a deep, deep sleep. As with Lightning, the work I have done with Gekko has done tons for me professionally, and I really want to thank everyone who became part of our community here and motivated me to keep working on the project. Don’t be shocked if in a few years from now I hop back in for a Wii U emulator.

If you’re wondering, I’m not exactly going anywhere, and have plans to continue to be very active in the scene. Chrono and I have started a new gaming and emulation site – Sixbit – that we hope will grow to be a refreshing new community to help revive the emulation and homebrew scene. Please stop by and say hello! I hope to see many of you over there in the future

Regards,

ShizZy (Eric)

A very big thank you
Posted by Lightning @ October 27, 2010, 8:03 PM

I was talking to a friend shortly after I let Gekko out into the public. Long short short, as a result of Gekko I was offered a job doing top secret development work and am thrilled. A large part of it came down to being impressed with the cpu work I had done, although this wasn't the only project they looked at that I participated in.

I wouldn't have had this opportunity had Gekko not progressed to where it is now and that wouldn't have occurred if people weren't around helping to push the project along.

Thank you.

Gekko going Public
Posted by Lightning @ October 12, 2010, 7:26 PM

After many years of work, we are releasing gekko into the public. It is behind Dolphin in terms of what is possible and functional though.

This release is due to a variety of reasons. Most of it is due to myself being the sole developer at the moment. I've been moving along on it however the pace is slowing down due to various issues in increasing speed and other events in my life, going for my BS degree for instance on top of family and work.

I may continue to peck away at it or I may not, I am uncertain at the moment. The code is also being released. If it is useful to anyone or further's Dolphin then great. I developed the code using just publicly available information prior to Dolphin's source being publicly released so I can not speak as to wether or not there is any benefit to them as I have not looked at their code since I started on this project.

The code and public exe is being hosted on Google's code at http://gekko-gc-emu.googlecode.com. If you have questions please email me. If you find the code useful, please email me. I enjoy seeing others benefit from my knowledge and things I have created.

The exe can be found at http://code.google.com/p/gekko-gc-emu/downloads/list. There are a few enhancements since the v0.3 release, mostly in the DynaRec but I can't recall what all of the updates are.

Releasing 0.3
Posted by Lightning @ December 02, 2009, 1:34 PM

We are releasing 0.3. If you are a N'Sider then it should be available to you, otherwise I'm sorry. I know Dolphin is ahead enough that there is no reason to make this public as it would only turn into "dolphin can do this why can't you". Maybe if I can get these memory card bugs resolved.

I know it has been a long time coming and am sorry for the delay in the release. I can only hope this next year will be better.

Looking for Help...
Posted by ShizZy @ January 28, 2009, 5:46 PM

As we are in the process of preparing the next closed beta release (N'Sider), we have decided it would be best for the project to expand our team to include new programmers. The emulator, although very far along in development, is still at a stage where there are many areas of emulation that have yet to even be touched, and the areas that have been worked on are still very incomplete and lacking features. It is simply a lot of work to keep up with with only two developers.

If you are interested in contributing to the project, please let us know what section of the project you are interested in working on (although you will not be limited by this), and your relevant programming experience. If we feel that you will be an asset to the team, we will then welcome you and provide you will all developer access. :-) Any inquiries or questions can be sent to me via forum PM. It's a great opportunity to join a very motivated team (I speak for both the developers, testers, N'Siders, and everyone else part of the project) and a very great community.

In addition, we are looking to enhance the website design. If you have interest in this, and experience, please feel free to contact me as well.

Thank you!
Eric

I'm Back :-)
Posted by ShizZy @ January 25, 2009, 7:54 PM

Good Afternoon everyone-
I would just like to inform you all that after about 6 months away from the project that I have decided to dive back into development. Since going to college, I found myself with other priorities and couldn't justify devoting all my time to an emulator like I could in high school. Well... time went on and I eventually realized that it wasn't just an emulator, but that seeing the project evolve really made me happy :-) That, and after the countless hours that were put into the project over the past 3 years, I couldn't just let it fall apart after having gotten this far.

So, I'm back. And hopefully, with more than just one person writing code now, the project will show a lot more life.

Regards,
ShizZy

New Year
Posted by Lightning @ January 05, 2009, 2:17 PM

It is a new year and work continues. I've made a few improvements since the last N'Sider beta but not enough to consider another release yet. I had planned on getting a lot more done over the Christmas break I had from work, however, the constant calls I got from work trashed that idea.

So what is the current status of the emulator? Just about everything except floating point math is implemented, although I do have a couple straggling functions that are not floating point to complete.

A massive core change was done to cut down on processing data, however some of the textures are now broke. Most textures are corrected but I still have 2 or 3 texture bugs that I'm still tracking.

Still no sound. Memory cards are still half implemented. They are seen but still seen as full with no saves. Haven't figured that one out yet either.

Sadly, at the moment, I'm the sole programmer working on the emulator. Shizzy is MIA. You could ask why I haven't tried to get others to help, well, the honest answer is that few people actually enjoy such a challenge and will stick with it.

Any other questions? I'm not going to answer all questions, but will answer as I see fit.

N'Sider Gekko Beta 0.2
Posted by Lightning @ July 07, 2008, 3:21 AM

The new 0.2 beta is out for the N'Siders. Note, awhile back the forum had the database cleaned up and some N'Sider accounts were deleted. If you signed up and find that your account is now missing, please recreate your forum user then email or private message me with the email address you used for the PayPal payment. Once I confirm the email address I will add you back to the N'Sider area and you will have access to the beta.

If you sign up for the N'Sider area, outside of the above group of people, you will have to wait until the next release to get a copy.

Well, a slight overlook by Martin and gekko-emu.com expired. In the process of trying to contact him. In the meantime, gekko-emu.net has been registered as a backup, just in case the .com is lost to a domain squatter.

Birth
Posted by Lightning @ October 12, 2007, 2:18 AM

Anyone that has been in the forums or on IRC is aware that I have a child on the way. As a result of preparing the house for a new baby, not much development has occurred on my end. The doctor will be inducing my wife Monday. I am not going to disappear, but it does have an impact on Gekko development. Be patient and things will occur.

Digg
Posted by Lightning @ August 16, 2007, 12:30 PM

Digg Page (For some reason digg decided to remove the whole article. At least I have a screenshot)

We were on Digg over a picture. I do not even want to think what will happen when we release a version.

Quick stats:
147 max people on the forum at once before the database could not keep up

Usage stats show 67084 maximum hits for a day (note, a hit is 1 IP potentially accessing multiple pages), average a day is 16791 hits.

We chewed thru 1.4GB of bandwidth last night and most of our pictures are not local but on image shack, etc

I'm unsure how many people joined #gekko on EFNet.

592 Diggs last I looked.

First Gekko video!
Posted by Chrono Archangel @ June 16, 2007, 8:03 PM

Alright, in the last week, a website (no need to link as they already got enough attention for their accusations) has directly attacked the credibility of Gekko. Normally we wouldn't care so much of what others think but they went to such trouble to get their point accross that we feel we have to respond.

No, this does not mean a release. (They would like that, wouldn't they? :P) But my buddy Knuckles who is also a betatester of Gekko decided to make a little video for you guys.

Click here! (Right-click --> Save target as...)

I hope you enjoy what you see. The video speed isn't the real speed the game would be going. It's slower due to Hypercam running over it (and using some of the CPU). The video is encoded in xvid. You will need this decoder installed in order to be able to watch the video.

There are a lot more pictures and informations in the N'Sider section.

Join Gekko N'Sider!
Posted by Chrono Archangel @ March 25, 2007, 4:37 AM

We are officially opening Gekko N'Sider!

Gekko N'Sider is located in our forums and will show you the latest development from the Gekko team on a weekly basis. Tons of screenshots and videos will be posted for your eyes only. To become an N'Sider member, we ask a donation of 7 USD (via PayPal) for a lifetime subscription which will mainly go into helping ShizZy buy a new development PC. (He's looking into getting a dual core/64bit PC to be able to make Gekko utilize those technologies)

We ask that everything located in that section stays in there and does not find its way all over the internet. We expect you to respect the authors hard work. If we find that some members do not respect these wishes, we will remove their permissions to view the N'Sider section.

Here are the steps to suscribe to N'Sider :

  • Create an account at our forums or login to an existing account
  • Go to the usergroups page located in the bar at the top
  • Select Gekko N'Sider and click View Information
  • Click on Subscribe to this group
  • Click on the big Suscribe button and fill in the PayPal information
  • Once the payment is completed, you will automatically be able to access the N'Sider sections (located under General Discussion)

You can alternatively follow this link if you're already a member.

We hope to see you in N'Sider. Your input is always welcomed and the authors are actively posting in those sections to reply to your questions.

We're Not Usually This Nice...
Posted by ShizZy @ February 20, 2007, 4:08 AM

...But here's a little progress shot to let you know that Gekko is not at all dead, and in fact the team is more allive right now than it has ever been.

Shot taken with Gekko's own Video Plugin that I have been working on over the past few months, in the Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker. That is, we no longer use Dolphin Video.

I won't say much, but I will say we have some big surprises in store that aren't quite evident from just a screenshot :-)

Gekko forums now opened!
Posted by Chrono Archangel @ February 04, 2007, 10:01 PM

It's finally here! Quite a few poeple had asked for a forum and with the spam issues we were having with the comments on the mainpage news, I went ahead and created Gekko's official forum. :)

It took me all last night and this morning to integrate the news and comments system to the forum, learning PHP as I go.

A new button has been added in the header bar completely to the right to access the forum. It will now be mandatory to register to the forum to be able to post comments on news. (Helping us avoid the issues we had earlier ;))

Finally, you will notice that the forum currently uses the default template. I am no artist but I will try to wip something up when I have the chance in the next few months.

Crash Bandicoot Goes In Game!
Posted by Chrono Archangel @ February 04, 2007, 2:27 PM

My good friend Chrono has just informed me that Crash Bandicoot goes in game in the latest build of Gekko, something that I was not recently aware of. Also, thanks goes to him for putting the finishing touches on the website and giving you guys more screenshots to look at, without him you'd all still be staring at pong ;-)

Enjoy, there's much more to come! Check out media for more Crash Bandicoot screenshots as well.

Website launch!
Posted by Chrono Archangel @ February 04, 2007, 2:23 PM

The time has come to unveil the Gekko website! [d.o.u.g] has done an awesome job designing Gekko's homepage. I'll be keeping this website up to date with all the new information, advancements, rants and releases from the crew.

ShizZy started the Gekko project in the month of November last year. With the help of Aprentice that joined him in December of the same year, they got Pong running in early 2006. ZeZu, a long-time programmer in the emulation scene, helped Gekko for about three months. Then Thakis came along. Better known for his THP Player and his reverse engineering of the GameCube's file formats, he has worked on the graphics side of the project, making the first graphics plugin for Gekko. Finally, Lightning joined the team in July this year. It wasn't long before he fixed a major bug preventing commercial games from booting.

With that said, keep an eye on this page for more updates!
